Busoga, a sub-region endowed with significant agricultural and natural resources, continues to grapple with poverty levels that, while declining, remain a concern. Recent data from the 2023/2024 Uganda National Household Survey indicates a drop in monetary poverty to 18.9 percent, down from 29.4 percent in 2019/2020. However, local leaders and stakeholders believe that a more strategic utilization of the region’s assets can further accelerate this progress and lift more households out of poverty.

A key suggestion involves reviving commercial farming of crops historically suited to specific areas within Busoga. For instance, in Namutumba District, groundnut cultivation on just two acres can potentially yield Shs10 million per season, owing to the crop’s versatility and consistent market demand. Similarly, rice, a high-demand crop with export potential, is seen as a viable option given the favorable climate.

Other agricultural initiatives proposed include the reintroduction of millet and orange farming, which once provided substantial income. The revival of large-scale cattle rearing is also encouraged, as the region was once a significant cattle corridor. Beyond cash crops, promoting the cultivation of essential food crops is emphasized as a means to improve food security and reduce household expenditure, thereby directly combating poverty.

Diversifying income sources beyond traditional agriculture is also crucial. Stakeholders point to the potential of the boda boda industry, which requires no specific academic qualifications and can offer a daily income of Shs10,000, contributing to household earnings. Fish farming, given Busoga’s abundant water bodies, is another avenue being explored.

Furthermore, emphasis is placed on education and skills development, equipping the younger generation with the necessary tools for stable employment. Government livelihood programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga are seen as vital for empowering individuals and boosting small businesses. Creating local employment opportunities and encouraging residents to invest within their own districts are also highlighted as important strategies for sustainable development and poverty reduction in Busoga.
