The Governor of Darfur, Mini Arko Minawi, has expressed confidence that Sudanese government forces are making progress in reclaiming territory from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), potentially marking a turning point in the ongoing conflict.

During a recent address to Sudanese nationals living in Uganda, Governor Minawi conveyed that government troops are actively working to restore security and regain control of areas occupied by the paramilitary group. “The war will end because the government is doing its best to protect the people and their land. Right now, the government is winning the war and winning the ground and stepping forward,” he stated.

Sudan has been embroiled in severe instability since April 2023 due to a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. The conflict has spread widely, significantly impacting the Darfur region, an area previously devastated by an earlier conflict.

Governor Minawi explained that his visit to Kampala was intended to reassure the Sudanese diaspora and to urge refugees to adhere to Ugandan laws and maintain good conduct. “We came to talk to our people and let them know that as refugees they have to adhere to the laws of Uganda. As Africans, I came to send greetings, bring hope and tell them to appreciate Uganda and not engage in any crimes,” he said.

He also highlighted the regional implications of Sudan’s destabilization, calling for collective action from African leaders to resolve the violence, describing it as a continental disaster. Governor Minawi extended his gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni and the Ugandan government for their open-door policy, offering safety and educational opportunities to fleeing Sudanese families and students. “Uganda remains open for us, the people of Sudan, and that is why this community is here, especially our students. We are especially grateful for the opportunity you have given our students to study in Uganda,” he remarked.

He implored community leaders to guide the youth, encouraging Sudanese nationals in Uganda to contribute positively to their host country while maintaining hope for a peaceful return home. “Our Sudanese community in Uganda, I encourage you to remain steadfast in your contribution to both the host country and our homeland. I urge you to live in harmony with the host community, respect the laws of Uganda,” Minawi added.
