The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Butambala District has extended the remand of former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi. He is scheduled to appear again on August 14, when Magistrate Aminah Wahab will deliver a ruling on his bail application.
Kivumbi, who is also the deputy president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for the Buganda Region, appeared in court on Tuesday under tight security. He faces charges of inciting violence against the government during a public address on July 9, 2026, and of managing an unlawful society in Bugoye Village, Butambala District. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During the court session, Kivumbi’s legal team presented four sureties for his bail, including prominent NUP figures John Baptist Nambeshe and Joel Ssenyonyi, as well as MP Francis Zaake and Kivumbi’s sister, Mastulah Nalutaaya.
Prosecution also requested that journalists be restricted from live broadcasting within the courtroom during proceedings. Kivumbi’s arrest occurred at a roadblock in Mpigi District by armed security personnel. His detention sparked concern among supporters and opposition members who called for transparency regarding his whereabouts and legal process.
This is not the first time Kivumbi has faced legal troubles this year. He was previously arrested in January concerning allegations related to the deaths of several individuals at his home and the destruction of public property. The current charges are distinct from those earlier allegations.
