Kasese Municipality is witnessing a significant expansion of its night economy, transforming from a town where businesses closed at dusk to a vibrant commercial hub that remains active long after sunset. This growth is attributed to improved road infrastructure, increased street lighting, and a heightened sense of security, which collectively instill greater confidence among traders and customers.
Key areas like Nyakasanga, Crescent Road, and Stanley Street are now bustling hubs, serving travelers, workers, and residents with services extending into the early morning hours. Restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets, and fuel stations are among the businesses contributing to this extended economic activity.
The municipality has also capitalized on this shift by introducing night parking fees and collecting revenue from licensed nighttime vendors, thereby bolstering its locally generated income. Mayor Chance Kahindo highlighted that these developments are crucial for both supporting nighttime businesses and increasing municipal revenue.
Despite the positive strides, many residents express a desire for the nighttime economy to spread beyond the main business districts. Concerns about inadequate lighting and security in the outskirts mean that many businesses still close early due to safety fears for both personnel and earnings. Residents are urging for more streetlights and increased security patrols to ensure broader participation and benefit from the expanding night trade.
Security authorities have assured the public that protecting lives and property is a top priority, with gradual security operations being implemented in collaboration with local leaders. The ongoing development of Kasese’s night economy, stakeholders believe, hinges on continued investment in infrastructure and safety measures to ensure its benefits reach all corners of the municipality, fostering greater employment and economic vitality.
