Kigezi Wetlands Face Ecological Threat as Papyrus Bird Populations Decline, Study Reveals

Papyrus wetlands in East Africa are crucial habitats for numerous bird species that rely on them for breeding, feeding, and shelter. However, a comprehensive three-year research project conducted by Kabale University has revealed that these unique ecosystems are increasingly under threat from habitat degradation, agricultural expansion, and unsustainable resource utilization.
The study, which focused on wetlands such as Bukiro-Kibaale, Nyamuriro, and those surrounding Lakes Bunyonyi, Mutanda, and Mulehe, recorded over 3,000 observations of six specialist papyrus bird species. Researchers identified the Rushebeya-Kanyabaha, Bukiro-Kibaale, and Nyaruteme wetlands as particularly important for supporting vulnerable populations of the papyrus yellow warbler.
Despite the presence of sizable papyrus swamp areas around lakes Bunyonyi and Mutanda, the research team noted significant encroachment in wetlands like Nyamuriro and Nyaruteme, primarily due to agricultural activities and the establishment of cattle farms. The study also documented a diverse array of 44 herpetofauna species, including 32 amphibians and 12 reptiles.
In response to these findings, Kabale University has presented its research to the Ministry of Water and Environment and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Key recommendations include safeguarding threatened papyrus-dependent species, protecting high-altitude wetland ecosystems in southwestern Uganda, and supporting community conservation efforts. NEMA officials have urged local authorities to integrate biodiversity conservation strategies into their development plans and called for coordinated stakeholder action to address these interconnected environmental challenges.
The research was funded by development partners to the tune of approximately USD 420,000. This study underscores the urgent need for robust conservation measures to protect the delicate balance of papyrus wetland biodiversity.
