The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has officially announced that opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye was discharged from Mulago National Referral Hospital on August 7, 2026, and has since returned to Luzira Prisons Hospital. This clarification follows a period of considerable public speculation and concern over Besigye’s health and location after his admission to Mulago.
Dr. Besigye, who has run for president multiple times, spent ten days at Mulago after being admitted in critical condition. He reportedly collapsed in court on July 29, leading to his emergency transfer to the hospital, where he was initially placed in the Intensive Care Unit.
Frank Baine Mayanja, spokesperson for the Prisons Service, stated that Dr. Besigye’s condition is improving and that the prison medical team is now managing his ongoing treatment. He also confirmed that Besigye’s family members and personal doctors, including his sister Dr. Olive Kobusingye, continue to have access to him.
The UPS urged the public to disregard “misinformation and disinformation” circulating about Besigye’s health and whereabouts, noting that some reports have been inaccurate. The specific medical condition that led to his hospitalization at Mulago has not been disclosed by the Prisons Service.
Dr. Besigye is currently facing treason charges, along with his aide Hajj Obeid Lutale. They were detained in November 2024 after being apprehended in Kenya and returned to Uganda. The charges relate to alleged meetings held in various international and local cities between 2023 and 2024, aimed at soliciting funds, acquiring weapons, and organizing to overthrow the government. Besigye and his co-accused deny these charges, which their legal team and supporters maintain are politically motivated.
