During his departure from a NATO summit in Turkey last month, former President Donald Trump allegedly engaged in a covert plane swap to evade a potential Iranian missile threat. Reports suggest Trump boarded the visible Air Force One at Ankara airport for show before being secretly transferred via an elevated catering truck to a smaller military jet.
This clandestine maneuver, detailed by outlets like The Washington Post and BBC, occurred after U.S. intelligence detected credible information pointing to a threat against Trump’s aircraft from Iran. Trump himself had previously declared he was Iran’s “number one target” during the summit.
The incident took place shortly after the U.S. renewed military actions against Iran following a breakdown in diplomatic negotiations. While Trump initially announced he would depart on the older Air Force One “for old time’s sake,” he was ultimately transported on a modified Boeing 757, a type often used by the Vice President.
Journalists and some White House staff were reportedly aboard the original Air Force One, with their window shades ordered closed, unaware of the president’s actual departure. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is said to have boarded the secondary aircraft separately to maintain an illusion of normalcy.
Trump later rejoined the older Air Force One in the UK before transitioning to a newer, Qatar-donated aircraft for the flight back to Washington. When questioned by reporters about the lowered window shades on the flight from Turkey, Trump alluded to “dangerous flight” conditions due to adversaries, confirming ongoing threats to his life from Iran.
While the White House has not directly confirmed the plane swap, a spokesperson stated the newer aircraft is state-of-the-art and secured, though undergoing further upgrades. Previous reports had indicated security concerns regarding the Qatar-donated jet, with the Secret Service recommending Trump switch planes for his return.
