Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has urged 222 senior officers from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) who are retiring to continue contributing to the nation. Speaking at a ceremony in Mbuya for officers comprising Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels, and Majors under Batch 16, Gen. Muhoozi stressed that their careers in uniform may be ending, but their service to Uganda should not.
He encouraged the retirees to view this transition not as an endpoint, but as the commencement of a new phase where their accumulated experience, wisdom, and leadership can be applied to promoting peace, mentoring youth, and supporting community development. Gen. Muhoozi exhorted them to become “ambassadors of patriotism, discipline, and the unity of our people.”
Furthermore, the Chief of Defence Forces advised the officers to exercise financial prudence as they re-enter civilian life. He cautioned against the mismanagement of retirement benefits and encouraged wise planning, prudent investment, and sustained financial discipline.
Gen. Muhoozi acknowledged the significant contributions of these retiring officers to the UPDF’s growth from its origins in the liberation struggle into a professional military force in Africa. He also highlighted the evolving security landscape, which necessitates continuous modernization within the UPDF to address emerging threats like terrorism, cybercrime, and climate-related disasters.
He underscored the need for the force to enhance its technological capabilities, foster innovation, and strengthen joint operations. Gen. Muhoozi also recognized the support from the government and President Yoweri Museveni for the UPDF’s development. Finally, he paid tribute to the families of the retiring officers, acknowledging their shared sacrifices and the unique demands of military life, including prolonged separations and difficult deployments.
