Members of Parliament voiced concerns over the escalating insecurity in various parts of Uganda during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The legislators debated a motion to appreciate the President’s State of the Nation Address, highlighting how security challenges are affecting the daily lives of Ugandans.

Hon. David Okwere, representing Bukedea County, drew attention to sophisticated land grabbing schemes in his constituency. He described how modern surveying techniques, including the use of drones, are employed to encroach upon residents’ land without their knowledge, causing significant distress.

In contrast, Hon. Stella Atyang, Woman Representative for Moroto District, acknowledged the President’s successful disarmament efforts in the Karamoja sub-region. However, she urged the government to implement sustainable mechanisms to maintain the hard-won peace and to swiftly address minor incidents like petty thefts to assure residents of ongoing government commitment.

Bukimbiri County MP, Hon. Eddie Kwizera, lauded the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for maintaining Uganda as a “island of peace.” He stressed the importance of enhanced screening procedures for individuals entering the country to prevent potential criminal elements from undermining national security.

Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and a UPDF representative in Parliament, encouraged citizens to actively defend the country’s peace achievements. He emphasized that Uganda’s prolonged period of peace and stability over the last four decades is a testament to its well-developed national security system, which has earned international recognition.

The discussion comes in the wake of President Museveni’s State of the Nation Address, where he linked wealth creation to peace, law, and order, attributing the nation’s stability to the UPDF, Police, and Judiciary.
