Nansana Schools Receive Science Kits to Bolster New Curriculum

Nansana Municipality has received a significant boost for its primary education sector with the distribution of 20 packages of science kits and mini-laboratory equipment from the government. This initiative is a crucial step towards implementing the new lower primary curriculum, which emphasizes hands-on learning experiences.
Education officials expressed their gratitude, noting the considerable challenges teachers have faced in delivering practical science lessons due to a lack of adequate teaching tools. Previously, educators often resorted to improvising with substandard materials or relying on theoretical explanations, which limited students’ understanding and engagement.
The supplied kits contain 46 items each, including models of the human body, materials for studying basic electricity and optics, first aid supplies, measurement tools, and units for understanding magnetism and mechanics. This practical approach is expected to improve student performance and foster a spirit of innovation from an early age.
Mayor John Bosco Sserunkuuma highlighted the shift from secondary school to primary level for practical science education, anticipating a substantial improvement in learners’ outcomes. He expressed hope that this would nurture future innovators, likening the potential to that seen in developed nations.
However, the enthusiasm for the new equipment is tempered by ongoing concerns. School administrators and leaders have also appealed to the government to address critical shortages of textbooks and to reinstate school feeding programs. They argue that these basic necessities are fundamental to a conducive learning environment and that the lack of proper resources can hinder effective education delivery, even with new science kits.
The initial distribution targeted 20 schools, including 15 high-performing ones and five that had lower scores in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations. The Ministry of Education and Sports has indicated that more local governments will receive similar support in subsequent phases as funding allows, with the current rollout covering 31 local governments across 17 regions.
Teachers have welcomed the kits, foreseeing a positive impact on student confidence and comprehension. They believe the practical application of scientific concepts will make learning more engaging and effective, moving away from reliance on less illustrative methods like wall charts and drawings. This initiative marks a promising development in equipping Ugandan schools for the demands of modern education.
