Uganda AIDS Commission Debunks 'Miracle' HIV Prayer Cures

The Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) is cautioning the public against unverified claims of HIV cures through prayer, stressing that antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains the only scientifically proven method for managing the virus. The Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) has issued a strong warning against viral social media claims suggesting that HIV can be cured through prayer. The government agency emphasized that while faith leaders offer valuable spiritual support, claims of healing must be backed by scientific evidence.

Recent online posts have circulated widely, alleging an HIV-positive individual was miraculously cured after attending a prayer service in Kampala. This has ignited public debate, with the UAC stepping in to clarify the current medical understanding of HIV.

According to the UAC, there is no scientifically validated cure for HIV currently available for widespread clinical use. The commission reiterated that Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is highly effective in controlling the virus, restoring the immune system, and enabling individuals to lead long, healthy lives.

The UAC cautioned against confusing viral suppression, achieved through consistent ART adherence, with a complete eradication of the virus. Under the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) initiative, individuals on ART can reach undetectable viral loads, meaning they cannot transmit HIV sexually, but the virus remains in their system.

Claims of a cure based on personal testimony or rapid tests cannot be verified. The UAC stated that any purported cure would require rigorous assessment by qualified health professionals using approved national testing algorithms.

Defaulting on ART treatment, the commission warned, leads to rapid viral multiplication, immune system weakening, increased risk of opportunistic infections, and the potential development of drug-resistant strains. Faith leaders are urged to encourage congregants to adhere to medical treatment alongside spiritual support, rather than presenting them as conflicting choices.

This advisory comes as Uganda faces ongoing HIV challenges, with an estimated 1.5 million people living with the virus and around 100 new infections daily. Consistent treatment adherence is crucial for curbing transmission.
