The Uganda Golf Union (UGU) and its partners have successfully maintained the substantial Shs1 billion sponsorship value for the upcoming Uganda Golf Open. This significant backing ensures a robust prize purse and comprehensive logistical support for the multi-event championship, which spans five weeks.
This year’s edition marks the return of the Open to the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) at Kitante, a venue familiar to golfers after previous tournaments were held at locations like Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club. Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), under its premium blended Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker, is the title sponsor, contributing Shs650 million.
Johnnie Walker East Africa brand manager Christine Kyokunda highlighted the brand’s commitment, stating, “Our continued investment in the Johnnie Walker Uganda Open is about supporting a platform that brings together talent, ambition and opportunity, while creating an experience that Ugandans and visitors can connect with.” The brand aims to offer an enhanced experience beyond the game, incorporating elements of fashion, music, and art.
Prize money sees a notable increase, with professionals competing for Shs150 million, amateurs for Shs15 million, and ladies for Shs10 million. Absa Bank Uganda is also a key supporter, providing Shs300 million for the Pro-Am leg, a commitment they have maintained for the seventh consecutive year.
The championship, set to run from August 13 to September 11, will feature several distinct events, including the Ladies Open, Seniors Open, Amateur Open, Pro-Am, Professional Open, and Juniors Open. The UGC course is prepared to host approximately 600 players across these events. Additional support comes from MTN Uganda, Crown Beverages, Pearl Marina, Case Medical Services, and Rose Foam, among others.
