The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has announced a significant expansion of its Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS), bringing 12 additional sectors under its mandatory coverage. This directive is a strategic effort by the tax body to improve tax administration and ensure greater compliance across the business landscape.

The newly included sectors range widely, encompassing critical areas of the economy. Among these are fuel stations, which will now be required to integrate EFRIS into their sales processes. Similarly, utility service providers, including electricity and water companies, will fall under the new mandate.

Manufacturers, a cornerstone of the industrial sector, are also part of this expansion. The URA’s intention is to ensure that all transactions are accurately recorded and reported, thereby reducing tax evasion and increasing revenue collection.

Other sectors affected by this directive include telecommunications, hotels, and supermarkets, among others. The URA has been progressively rolling out EFRIS, emphasizing its benefits such as real-time transaction monitoring and simplified tax filing for businesses. The authority encourages all affected businesses to familiarize themselves with the system and its requirements to ensure a smooth transition.

This latest phase of EFRIS implementation is expected to further strengthen the URA’s ability to track economic activity and enhance the integrity of the tax system. Businesses are advised to seek guidance from the URA on specific integration procedures and deadlines.
