The Baby Cranes have earned their spot back in the top tier of African U-20 rugby. Following a dominant 81-0 win in the first leg, Uganda clinched promotion with a hard-fought 27-12 victory over Zambia in the return fixture at Wankulukuku.
While the first match saw a lopsided scoreline, the second encounter presented a sterner test for the Ugandan team. Zambia displayed significantly improved attacking intent, forcing Uganda to work diligently for their points. Despite controlling possession and territory for large periods, the Baby Cranes encountered challenges converting their dominance into scores.
Key tries from Sharif Tibo and Victor Agaba, followed by securing scores from Jacob Abaasa and Prince Kakaire, ultimately sealed the win and confirmed Uganda’s promotion. This achievement means Uganda replaces Tunisia, who were relegated after losing to Zimbabwe.
Uganda’s captain, Elijah Katinti, acknowledged Zambia’s enhanced performance, stating, “They gave us a good game.” He emphasized the team’s responsibility to elevate their performance as they prepare for the tougher competition in the Performance Division. This promotion marks a significant redemption after their relegation in the 2023 campaign.
In the Performance Division final, Kenya emerged champions, defeating Namibia 33-14, securing Africa’s sole spot in the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Chile. Zimbabwe secured third place with a victory over Tunisia.
Uganda is scheduled to play Zimbabwe in a concluding Test match on Saturday.
