Baby Cranes Earn Promotion to Rugby Africa U20 Performance Division

The Uganda U-20 rugby team, affectionately known as the Baby Cranes, have officially clinched their spot in the prestigious Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy Performance Division. This achievement comes after a decisive 27-12 victory over Zambia in the second leg of their promotion playoff, held at the Wankulukuku Stadium.

The win capped off a dominant performance throughout the week, following an overwhelming 81-0 thrashing of the same Zambian side in the opening match. However, the second leg presented a sterner test, with Zambia displaying a significantly improved attacking prowess and forcing Uganda to work diligently for their points.

Despite controlling much of the game’s territory and possession, the Baby Cranes initially struggled to convert opportunities into scores. Tries from Sharif Tibo and Victor Agaba, followed by crucial scores from centre Jacob Abaasa and lock Prince Kakaire, ultimately sealed the promotion the team desperately needed.

Zambia, a much-improved outfit from their first encounter, showed flashes of brilliance, with Kabwe Mulenga and Andrea Ngosa crossing the try line. This resurgence by the visitors highlighted the growing competitiveness within the division.

Uganda’s promotion means they will replace Tunisia in the Performance Division. The successful playoff campaign serves as a form of redemption for the Baby Cranes, especially after their previous Performance Division campaign in 2023 ended in relegation following a loss to Zambia. This promotion marks a significant step forward for the young Ugandan rugby talent.
