A serious security concern forced an extraordinary change in President Donald Trump’s travel plans during his visit to Turkey last month. According to a source briefed on the matter, a credible threat that Air Force One could be targeted by a shoulder-fired missile led the Secret Service to orchestrate a clandestine switch to a smaller, less conspicuous aircraft.
The threat emerged on the final day of Trump’s visit to Ankara for the NATO summit, a period marked by heightened tensions with Iran. The Secret Service assessed the danger as both credible and imminent, necessitating immediate and covert action to protect the President.
In a move that was largely concealed, Trump and a select group of aides were reportedly moved via a catering truck to a C-32A jet. Meanwhile, the larger, distinctive Air Force One departed separately, carrying senior administration officials, White House staff, and the press corps, acting as a decoy.
President Trump later confirmed to reporters that the switch was made at the direction of the Secret Service. He stated that the decoy plane might have been at greater risk, as it would have been the more likely target for adversaries.
Experts suggest that the threat could have involved advanced heat-seeking missiles, which are increasingly difficult to detect. Such weapons can pose a significant risk as they home in on aircraft engines and are harder to track than traditional radar-guided systems.
While presidents occasionally travel discreetly in high-risk areas, this operation in Turkey was characterized by a lack of advance notice for the accompanying press. The Secret Service reportedly had limited time to react to the escalating situation.
The secrecy surrounding the event has led some commentators and lawmakers to question the safety of the aides and journalists aboard the decoy aircraft. However, the source indicated that the decision was made in the President’s best interest amidst escalating hostilities.
