As a deadly Ebola Bundibugyo Disease outbreak continues in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ugandan health experts are emphasizing the critical need for robust preventative measures to safeguard the nation’s hard-won Ebola-free status.

The Ministry of Health reports that a staggering 75 percent of Ebola cases previously recorded in Uganda were imported directly from the DRC, highlighting the persistent risk of cross-border transmission. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), stressed the importance of heightened vigilance and strengthened collaboration between the two nations, especially as the DRC outbreak has not yet reached its peak.

Uganda has demonstrated solidarity by establishing two Ebola treatment centers in the DRC and deploying specialists to aid in containment efforts at the source. This proactive approach has contributed to Uganda’s significantly lower case fatality rate compared to the DRC. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s Minister of Health, confirmed that 58 Ugandan professionals have been sent to support the response in DRC, with treatment centers set up in Aru and Kasenyi.

To maintain its safety, Uganda is focusing on strengthening surveillance systems, particularly in districts bordering the DRC. Community health workers have been trained, and health facilities are on high alert to identify and report any suspicious cases. Local leaders in border districts like Kisoro, Kanungu, and Kasese are actively monitoring illegal entry points and maintaining preventive measures.

While Uganda’s peaceful environment facilitates effective outbreak management, experts note that insecurity and cultural practices in the DRC hinder containment efforts. The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Janabi, pointed out that peace in the DRC is paramount for controlling the outbreak and preventing its spread. He also emphasized the need for community engagement to address practices that facilitate transmission, such as traditional burial rituals.

The ongoing efforts underscore Uganda’s commitment to regional health security and its preparedness to combat the threat of Ebola.
