Uganda is urged to maintain robust vigilance against the Ebola virus, particularly given the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Experts highlight the critical need for strengthened surveillance systems, especially in districts bordering the DRC, to prevent potential spillover events.
Africa CDC Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya stressed the importance of cross-border collaboration, noting that the DRC outbreak has not yet reached its peak. He pointed out that a significant portion of recorded Ebola cases in Uganda have historically been importations from the DRC. “This outbreak is very serious,” Dr. Kaseya stated, referencing the high number of cases and deaths in the DRC.
Uganda’s Ministry of Health has demonstrated solidarity by establishing Ebola treatment centers in the DRC and deploying over 58 health professionals to aid in containment efforts at the source. This proactive approach has been commended by international health bodies, with Uganda showing a lower case fatality rate compared to the DRC.
World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Janabi, emphasized that strong surveillance remains key. Uganda has implemented heightened monitoring and community engagement, training local health workers and ensuring border districts are on high alert for suspicious cases. Measures include screening at health facilities and vigilance from community members.
Despite these efforts, challenges persist. Insecurity and cultural practices in the DRC can impede containment, while porous borders and illegal entry points in Uganda present ongoing risks. Local officials are maintaining strict border controls, even as these measures impact cross-border livelihoods. Experts also noted that peace in the DRC is fundamental to controlling the outbreak and preventing its spread.
