Uganda Cranes international Farouk Miya has spoken highly of the Airtel Masaza Cup, highlighting its crucial role in his development as a professional footballer. Returning to the Uganda Premier League with Vipers SC after a decade abroad, Miya believes the tournament, which features teams representing counties of the Buganda Kingdom, provided him with invaluable experience in handling the intense pressure of playing before large, passionate crowds.
Miya, now one of Uganda’s most decorated modern footballers with stints in Europe and 24 goals for the national team, emphasized that his early career steps in the Masaza Cup built his confidence. “That victory still feels fresh. Scoring the winning goal against Ssingo in the presence of the Kabaka was unforgettable,” Miya remarked, recalling the 2013 Masaza Cup final where his late free-kick secured the title for Mawokota.
His journey to professional football began with encouragement from Dr. Eddie Butindo and coach Edward Golola, who persuaded him to join the Mawokota team despite academic commitments. Miya’s impressive performances, including scoring eight goals in that championship season, led to his inclusion at St. Mary’s Kitende, a known football powerhouse. The Masaza Cup, growing into a significant grassroots competition, continues to offer a vital platform for young talent to be discovered and honed.
