France has launched disciplinary proceedings against its ambassador to the Central African Republic (CAR), Bruno Foucher, amid allegations of misconduct. The accusations, reportedly spanning from January 2024 to March 2024, suggest that Ambassador Foucher invited approximately 30 women to his official residence in the capital, Bangui.

These reported actions have triggered investigations by France’s foreign ministry, primarily focused on a potential security breach at the embassy. Some of the women are alleged to have stayed overnight at the residence, prompting questions about security protocols.

A French diplomat confirmed to the BBC that administrative procedures against the ambassador are underway and are currently ongoing. The exact nature and duration of these disciplinary measures remain unclear.

Ambassador Foucher, 65, has held his position in Bangui since 2023. His alleged misconduct surfaces at a delicate time for Franco-CAR relations, as both nations have been working to mend a previously strained bilateral relationship. Notably, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot had recently expressed satisfaction with the “complete restoration of relations” during a visit to Bangui in March.

This development casts a shadow over the efforts to strengthen ties between France and the CAR. The outcome of the disciplinary proceedings against Ambassador Foucher will be closely watched.
