Gators Swimming Club, renowned for clinching four of the last five Uganda Aquatics National Championships, is stepping beyond their competitive prowess to host their inaugural Gators Invitational Gala. The event is scheduled to take place at Kampala Parents School, Naguru, on August 15th and 16th.
This initiative marks a departure from the typical sprint galas organized by many clubs, which primarily attract younger swimmers. Gators’ coach, Muzafaru Muwanguzi, explained to the Daily Monitor that the club aims to “do something less replicated” and focus on quality competition.
While the initial plan included preliminaries and finals, time constraints led to their exclusion. The gala’s distinctiveness lies in its event selection, featuring a mix of sprint and middle-distance races, and a carefully curated age category system. Unlike the standard categories, Gators will begin with swimmers aged 10 and above, excluding those nine and younger.
The new age groupings will be 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-17, and 18 and Over. This structure is expected to create more challenging contests for swimmers who typically excel in their established age groups. Muwanguzi expressed optimism that this format will “bring more competition.”
Notable swimmers like Condoleezza Nakazibwe, who brings experience from the Commonwealth Games, are expected to participate, adding further prestige to the event. The gala will feature a range of events including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley races, along with medley and freestyle relays over the two days.
This gala promises to be a significant event for Ugandan swimming, showcasing Gators’ organizational skills alongside their competitive strength. The event will be held at Kampala Parents School, Naguru, on August 15-16. For more details, please refer to the Daily Monitor.
