The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced its commitment to increasing the availability of breastfeeding facilities throughout the city. This move comes after the successful launch of a dedicated breastfeeding room at the KCCA headquarters, City Hall.
KCCA Executive Director, Sharifah Buzeki, emphasized that the City Hall facility should serve as a model, not an endpoint. She highlighted the need for similar private and hygienic spaces in KCCA’s division offices, markets, and other work environments to help nursing mothers balance their professional responsibilities with their childcare needs.
“This is more than a legal obligation. It is a demonstration of our people-centred approach,” Buzeki stated during the launch, which coincided with Uganda’s observance of Breastfeeding Month. The new facility at City Hall was developed with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).
KCCA is actively seeking partnerships to replicate this initiative in various public spaces where mothers spend significant portions of their workday. Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi added that supporting nursing mothers not only benefits the employees but also enhances overall workplace performance, as mothers can be more focused knowing their children are safe.
While some KCCA-managed locations like Busega and Wandegeya markets already have such facilities, the authority aims for a city-wide expansion. The Ministry of Health and GAIN have both welcomed and pledged support for this effort, recognizing the critical need for workplaces to accommodate breastfeeding mothers, thereby removing barriers and promoting continued breastfeeding practices.
This push addresses the challenges many nursing mothers face upon returning to work, lacking adequate spaces to breastfeed or express milk. KCCA’s broader vision is to create a more supportive environment for working mothers across all its facilities.
