Makerere University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) has launched a highly successful short course in Critical Thinking and Social Intelligence. The inaugural three-week session concluded recently, drawing an impressive 350 applications for a limited number of spots, highlighting a strong demand for these vital skills.

Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, a key figure behind the initiative, explained that the course was conceived in response to the pervasive spread of misinformation and poorly reasoned arguments, particularly on social media. “Many people do not really think as they argue,” he stated, observing a widespread vulnerability to propaganda and manipulation.

The course originated from discussions among academics about making essential knowledge more accessible to professionals outside of traditional degree programs. The program emphasizes practical application, moving beyond standard lectures to incorporate group debates, hands-on exercises, and real-world professional scenarios. Topics covered include identifying logical fallacies, evidence-based reasoning, and distinguishing between truth, assumptions, and hearsay.

Participants praised the course for its practical relevance. Aidah Leah Nabunya, a communication professional, found the training instrumental in improving her approach to community engagement, emphasizing the need for ground-level research. Kennedy Amanya noted the value of the Social Intelligence component in fostering peaceful coexistence among individuals with diverse backgrounds and beliefs.

Given the strong initial response, organizers are now exploring ways to expand the program. Future plans include offering different levels of training, from introductory to advanced, and developing simplified versions for younger audiences. Dr. Ssentongo believes that fostering critical thinking habits early is crucial for building a more resilient and less easily manipulated society.
