Lionel Messi returned to the football pitch for Inter Miami this past Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute in the team’s 3-2 loss to Leon. This marks his first appearance since the recent passing of his father, Jorge Messi, in Rosario, Argentina, after a prolonged illness.
His father, who had served as Messi’s agent since the player was 14, was a constant presence throughout his illustrious career, including the 2022 World Cup victory. The news of Jorge’s death was followed by an emotional social media post from the 39-year-old forward, where he contemplated his future in football, stating he was “really not sure if I’ll carry on doing it for much longer.”
After attending a private funeral in Argentina on Sunday, Messi flew back to the United States. His return to the field was met with a significant ovation from the crowd, despite Inter Miami’s defeat. This loss also meant the team’s elimination from the Leagues Cup at the group stage, a competition they won in 2023 after Messi’s arrival.
Teammates have expressed admiration for Messi’s dedication. Midfielder Yannick Bright, who scored in the match, described Messi’s return as “incredible” and a testament to his commitment. “It shows how much he cares,” Bright commented. “When I saw he was here, all I was thinking about was to give my 150% for him.”
Despite the personal tragedy and his own reflections on retirement, Messi’s presence on the field highlighted his deep connection to the sport and his team. Leon coach Javier Gandolfi acknowledged Messi’s unique status, stating, “Today he demonstrated once more what he’s made of.”
