Uganda international Farouk Miya is back with Vipers SC, marking a significant return after his extensive career overseas. Reflecting on his journey, Miya emphasized the formative impact of the Airtel-sponsored Masaza Cup, a tournament he believes was instrumental in preparing him for the rigors of top-tier football.
The Masaza Cup, a popular tournament within the Buganda Kingdom, is known for its passionate fan base and the high expectations placed on its players. Miya found that competing before thousands of enthusiastic supporters in this competition instilled in him the confidence needed to perform under pressure, a skill vital for his recent return to the Uganda Premier League.
Before his European stints and crucial international goals, Miya’s early career development was significantly influenced by his time in the Masaza Cup. The tournament serves as a major grassroots platform, allowing young talent from various counties to gain exposure. Miya’s initial involvement came through coach Edward Golola, who invited him to play for Mawokota in the 2013 edition.
Despite initial hesitation due to academic commitments, Miya was persuaded to join. His dedication saw him balancing school with intense tournament play. He quickly became a key player for Mawokota, culminating in a memorable victory in the final against Ssingo at Nakivubo Stadium. Miya scored the winning goal from a late free-kick, securing a 1-0 win and a championship title in the presence of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.
“That victory still feels fresh. Scoring the winning goal against Ssingo in the presence of the Kabaka was unforgettable,” Miya stated, recalling the moment he shook the Kabaka’s hand as one of his proudest career achievements. He concluded the tournament as top scorer with eight goals.
This experience in the Masaza Cup provided Miya with invaluable lessons in handling pressure and performing in front of large crowds, laying a strong foundation for his successful career that has seen him play in multiple European leagues and become Uganda’s third all-time leading scorer. The tournament continues to be a vital breeding ground for football talent in Uganda.
