NDA Warns Public on Condom Sizing Amidst Market Concerns

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has advised the public, particularly men, to be aware of their correct condom size before purchasing contraceptives due to reported instances of small-sized condoms being available on the market. This comes as MPs on the COSASE committee raised public complaints during an oversight visit. The National Drug Authority (NDA) is urging the public to ensure they know their correct condom size before making purchases. This advisory follows an influx of complaints regarding the availability of condoms that are too small on the Ugandan market.

Ms. Brenda Kitimbo, Manager of Medical Devices at the NDA, addressed these concerns, stating that all condoms undergo rigorous testing and approval processes before being permitted for sale. She assured the public that the condoms available meet the required safety and quality standards. Kitimbo clarified that condom sizes on the Ugandan market typically range from a standard minimum of 53 millimeters to larger options at 56 millimeters.

“Members of the public must also know their size before going on the market to buy a condom. You must know your size,” Ms. Kitimbo emphasized.

Her remarks were made in response to queries raised by Members of Parliament on the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) during an oversight visit to the NDA offices. The MPs were investigating issues highlighted in the Value for Money Audit report 2025, specifically concerning the utilization of the NDA tower.

Despite assurances of quality, the NDA plans to enhance public awareness campaigns to educate consumers on the various condom sizes available and how to select a proper fit. This proactive step aims to mitigate issues arising from incorrect sizing.

During the same visit, the COSASE committee also noted significant underutilization of the NDA tower building, with several floors intended for laboratories remaining unoccupied or repurposed for office space due to a lack of funds for equipping them. The NDA indicated that equipping these facilities would be undertaken in a phased approach as financial resources become available.

This highlights a dual focus for the NDA: ensuring the quality and appropriate sizing of contraceptives for public health, while also addressing operational and infrastructural challenges within the authority.
