The High Court has sentenced two individuals, Lujja Bbosa Tabula and Noah Lugya, to death for their role in the assassination of Engineer Daniel Bbosa, the former leader of the Ndiga Clan. The court convicted the duo after they admitted guilt and confirmed the prosecution’s account of the events.

Justice David Matovu emphasized that the calculated and brutal nature of the crime warranted the maximum penalty under Ugandan law. While acknowledging the convicts’ remorse and their role in saving court time by pleading guilty, the judge stated that these mitigating factors were overshadowed by the severity of the offense.

Evidence presented indicated that Tabula supplied the firearm used in the killing and helped track Eng. Bbosa to Katosi before the attack. The firearm was later matched to spent cartridges found at the scene. Eng. Bbosa was shot and killed on February 25, 2024, while returning home with his wife and a domestic helper. The assailants intercepted his vehicle near his residence.

Justice Matovu used the case to warn against resorting to violence to settle disputes and cautioned against mob justice. He highlighted the near-loss of crucial evidence when one alleged co-conspirator, Enock Sserunkuma, was beaten to death by a mob shortly after the assassination. Lugya himself was rescued from a similar mob by security forces.

Prosecutors linked the killing to a clan chieftaincy dispute, with Tabula reportedly contesting Eng. Bbosa’s leadership. The court heard that the plot involved disguised motorcycle license plates and clandestine planning meetings. The judge noted that the assassination had a broad impact, affecting the victim’s family, the Ndiga Clan, the Buganda Kingdom, and the country due to Eng. Bbosa’s prominent status.

Tabula and Lugya have been remanded to await execution. Three other co-accused individuals, Harriet Nakiguli, Joseph Nakabake, and Ezra Mayanja, have pleaded not guilty and are awaiting trial, scheduled to begin on September 8.
