Uganda is strategically positioning itself as a prime gateway for Vietnamese businesses looking to penetrate the East African market and the broader African continent. The nation is keen on attracting more foreign direct investment and expanding trade relations, with the aim of significantly growing its economy.
This ambition was underscored at the recent Việt Nam–Uganda Business Forum in Hà Nội, which drew over 300 officials, business leaders, and investors. The event, a key component of Uganda’s economic diplomacy, aimed to foster stronger economic ties and explore investment opportunities.
Uganda views Vietnam not only as a trading partner but also as a successful development model. Ugandan Ambassador to Vietnam, Betty Bigombe, noted Vietnam’s transformation as an inspiration for Uganda’s own journey towards higher-income status. Strengthening economic diplomacy with Vietnam is seen as crucial for Uganda to achieve its goal of becoming a top middle-income country.
While diplomatic relations have existed since 1973, recent momentum has been building, particularly after Ugandan President Museveni’s visit to Vietnam in 2022. Despite this, bilateral trade remains modest, though it saw a significant increase from $22 million in 2024 to approximately $95.5 million in 2025. Vietnamese investment in Uganda currently stands at around $40 million, primarily in mining and construction.
The forum identified key sectors for potential collaboration, including agricultural processing, manufacturing, IT, tourism, mining, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. Uganda highlighted its strengths as an emerging economic hub in East Africa, boasting a young workforce, a growing consumer base, fertile land, abundant natural resources, and a strategic location within the East African Community.
Uganda offers attractive investment incentives, such as tax exemptions on imported equipment and access to a large regional market of approximately 300 million people. The country is particularly interested in leveraging Vietnamese expertise in agricultural processing, technology transfer, and human resource development, aiming to transform its strong political relationship into a mutually beneficial economic partnership.
