Five promising Ugandan youths are set to make their mark at the second Sharing Olympism Forum in Maseru, Lesotho. Melvin Tayebwa, Peace Nyafwono, Claire Nyapendi, Trevor Bossa Mutegeki, and Jeremiah Daniel Atwiine were chosen for their outstanding performance in the 11th Olympic Values Contest, an event organized by the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC).

This continental forum, hosted by the Lesotho National Olympic Committee, aims to bring together young leaders and sports administrators from across Africa. The focus will be on exchanging strategies for promoting Olympism, with particular emphasis on youth engagement, inclusivity, and the vital role of sports in fostering peace and development on the continent. The event is fully funded by Olympic Solidarity.

Under the theme “Promoting Olympism through Ubuntu,” participants from Kenya, South Africa, Eswatini, Uganda, and Lesotho will engage in a series of academic and cultural activities. These include debates, essay writing, poetry, quizzes, and public speaking, all centered on current African sports issues.

The Ugandan contingent includes coach and safeguarding officer Moreen Awor and NOC coordinator Joseph Oluka. UOC President Donald Rukare expressed his pride in the selected students, highlighting the committee’s commitment to promoting Olympism alongside the Olympic Games. He emphasized that these activities spread the core values of friendship, excellence, and respect among young people and stimulate regional interest.

The students will compete in various disciplines: Tayebwa, Nyafwono, and Nyapendi will participate in debate. Nyafwono will also showcase her talent in poetry, while Nyapendi will compete in essay writing. Mutegeki and Atwiine will represent Uganda in public speaking and quizzes, respectively.

The five delegates were selected from over 200 students representing 23 schools at the national Olympic Values Contest held in June at Olive School, Namugongo.
