A contingent of five talented Ugandan youth is set to represent the nation at the second Sharing Olympism Forum in Maseru, Lesotho. The forum, scheduled from August 13-16, will bring together young leaders and sports enthusiasts from across Africa to discuss and promote the ideals of Olympism.
The selected quintet – Melvin Tayebwa, Peace Nyafwono, Claire Nyapendi, Trevor Bossa Mutegeki, and Jeremiah Daniel Atwiine – earned their spots by demonstrating outstanding performance in the 11th edition of the Olympic Values Contest held in June.
Organized by the Lesotho National Olympic Committee with support from Olympic Solidarity, the forum’s theme is “Promoting Olympism through Ubuntu.” Participants will engage in a variety of activities, including debates, essay writing, poetry, quizzes, and public speaking, all centered on contemporary African sports issues. These academic and cultural exchanges aim to foster inclusivity, peace, and development through sport.
Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president Donald Rukare expressed his pride in the selected students, emphasizing the UOC’s commitment to promoting not just the Olympic Games but the broader values of friendship, excellence, and respect. “Having these activities that promote Olympism is one way of spreading the tenets of friendship, excellence, and respect among the young people,” Rukare stated during the team’s send-off.
The Ugandan delegation also includes coach and safeguarding officer Moreen Awor, and NOC coordinator Joseph Oluka. The students, representing various schools across Uganda, will compete in different disciplines based on their strengths, with some participating in multiple events.
