The Subway Skilling Centre in Kampala has welcomed its eighth cohort, comprising 350 young individuals, for a six-month vocational training program. This initiative is part of the Presidential Initiative on Skilling the Girl and Boy Child (PISGBC), designed to empower unemployed youth.
Participants will gain hands-on experience in four key trades: bakery, weaving, knitting, and shoemaking. The program focuses on providing practical skills to enable graduates to secure employment or start their own businesses, thereby fostering self-reliance.
According to Katushabe Stellamaris, the Supervisor at Subway Skilling Centre, the program specifically targets underprivileged youth, including school dropouts and those from informal settlements. “Our aim is to give them a second chance so that they can live better and happier lives,” she stated.
The center provides daily meals to ensure students can focus effectively on their studies throughout the training period. Upon completion, trainees will undergo assessment by the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) before graduation.
Ronah Kamahoro Natukunda, the centre’s Administrator, highlighted the program’s success in transforming lives, with many former students establishing successful ventures. She also noted the center’s current capacity limitation, which restricts enrollment to 350 students, and appealed for expanded facilities to train more young people.
Graduates expressed gratitude for the opportunity, believing the acquired skills will be instrumental in improving their futures. The PISGBC, established in 2017, has been instrumental in equipping numerous disadvantaged young people with marketable skills since its inception.
