Archbishop Kaziimba: MPs Must Prioritize Uganda Over Politics and Personal Gain

The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, has issued a strong appeal to Members of Parliament, urging them to place the interests of Uganda above political maneuvering and personal ambition. Speaking at the inaugural welcome service for the 12th Parliament, themed “Called to Serve,” the Archbishop reminded legislators that their mandate extends beyond self-advancement.

Archbishop Kaziimba stressed that political offices are meant to foster God’s kingdom and contribute to the nation’s development, rather than serving as avenues for personal enrichment. He encouraged MPs to reflect on the reasons their constituents elected them and to dedicate their service to building the country.

He further challenged the lawmakers to be the voice for the vulnerable, including the poor, widows, and those lacking hope. Upholding integrity, accountability, and responsible stewardship are paramount in public office, he stated, noting that MPs’ conduct both within and outside Parliament should honor their positions.

Maintaining a connection with their constituents is also crucial, the Archbishop advised, despite the demanding nature of parliamentary duties. He urged MPs to strike a balance between their legislative responsibilities and their obligations to the people who elected them, reminding them not to neglect their families.

During his sermon, Archbishop Kaziimba encouraged MPs to seek divine guidance in their decision-making, ensuring that laws and policies promote justice and the well-being of all Ugandans. He implored them to focus on matters that unite and build the nation, setting aside partisan differences.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa acknowledged the Archbishop’s message, highlighting Parliament’s commitment to prayer and spiritual guidance. He affirmed that success in the institution relies on dedicating its work to the Lord and translating prayer into action, urging MPs to pray for unity to foster effective teamwork across party lines.
