President Mahamat Déby of Chad has issued a pardon for his political opponent, Succès Masra, who was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison. This move allows for Masra’s release and comes as part of a broader initiative by the President to foster national unity and reconciliation.
Masra, a prominent critic of the current administration, had claimed victory in the 2024 elections against Déby. He was arrested in May on charges related to alleged incitement of violence and spreading hateful messages on social media, following clashes in the country’s southwest that resulted in at least 42 deaths.
The presidential pardon was announced four days after Déby pledged to free several convicted individuals. However, it is important to note that this pardon does not equate to an amnesty, meaning the pardoned individuals, including Masra and eight others, could still face prosecution.
The eight other political figures who received pardons are members of the Group for the Coordination of Political Actors (GCAP). They were serving eight-year sentences after being apprehended in April for organizing a banned protest. The presidency described all nine individuals as persons “in a position of power but not in line with justice.”
Masra’s party, Transformers, viewed the pardon as the opening of a “new page” for the nation. The opposition RNDT-Le Réveil party also welcomed the decision, calling it an “encouraging signal” and urging further steps towards inclusive dialogue.
Masra briefly served as interim prime minister between January and May 2024. The Déby family has held power in Chad for over three decades, with President Mahamat Déby assuming leadership after his father’s death in 2021.
