Authorities in Kiruhura District have successfully dismantled a livestock theft syndicate with the arrest of five suspects. The operation, which combined forces from Kiruhura District and Mbarara Central Police Station, took place in the early hours of August 12, 2026, in Lubiri Cell, Nyamityobora, Mbarara City.

The apprehended individuals include Dauda Kasujja, 45, a businessman; Moses Mugwisagye, 32; Julius Mwijuka, 36, a bricklayer; Felix Muhumuza, 35; and Swalleh Hamuza, 70. They are believed to be responsible for a series of thefts targeting kraals in Sanga Town Council and the sub-counties of Sanga, Akayanja, Kanyaryeru, and Kitatsi within Kiruhura District.

According to Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira, the syndicate operated between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM, with the primary motive being financial gain. Their modus operandi involved traveling to Sanga via public transport, then proceeding on foot to raid kraals. The stolen animals were reportedly slaughtered on-site, with the meat packed into backpacks for transport.

SP Kasasira further explained that the meat was then taken to a rented house belonging to a suspect before being sold at a butchery in Mbarara City operated by Swalleh Hamuza. The suspects are currently detained at Sanga Police Station and will be transferred to Kiruhura District Police Headquarters for further legal processes.
