Buganda Kingdom’s Premier, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a strong call for Ugandans to reaffirm their traditional values of brotherhood and mutual care. During a visit to Henry Kibirige, the son of former commander Bendicto Kibirige, in Mutundwe, Mayiga highlighted the potential damage to communities if social bonds weaken.

Mayiga shared personal anecdotes about the guidance he received from the elder Kibirige during his early years of service to the Kabaka. He expressed gratitude for these past interactions and emphasized that such relationships are built on shared history and mutual respect.

His visit to Kibirige, whose eyesight has recently deteriorated, served as a practical demonstration of the care he advocates for. Mayiga stated that despite not seeing Kibirige for some time, he felt compelled to visit, underscoring that they are “brothers in God” and that such connections should not be forgotten.

The Katikkiro commended Kibirige’s children and neighbors for their diligent care and attention to his well-being. He reminisced about a time when communities were more interconnected, with people readily assisting each other in times of need, contrasting it with modern society.

Mayiga cautioned against the uncritical adoption of Western lifestyles, suggesting that they can lead to isolation and weaken familial and community ties. He urged Ugandans to maintain their cultural practices and communication, emphasizing that blindly copying foreign trends could be detrimental to Ugandan society.

Henry Kibirige expressed his appreciation for the Katikkiro’s visit, noting their long-standing acquaintance since their school days. He praised Mayiga for his compassionate nature and for taking the time to check on him amidst his demanding responsibilities.
