The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has underscored the critical role of confidence, innovation, and trust in effective leadership. Speaking to members of the ‘Journey to the Boardroom’ initiative, an organization focused on developing professionals for leadership roles, Mayiga highlighted that leaders must not only inspire hope but also demonstrate tangible progress through their actions.

Mayiga stated that strong leadership is fundamental to the advancement of institutions, companies, and entire nations. He stressed that leaders are responsible for instilling confidence in their followers, assuring them that their collective efforts are directed towards success. “A good leader must give those they lead hope that they are on the right path towards success. Confidence and innovation are also very important,” he remarked.

To illustrate the power of innovation, Mayiga pointed to Belgium, a nation with comparatively few natural resources that has achieved significant economic growth through innovative strategies. This example serves to show how ingenuity can overcome resource limitations.

Furthermore, the Katikkiro emphasized the indispensable connection between a leader’s words and their deeds. He warned that a failure to align actions with pronouncements erodes the trust placed in leadership. “Whatever a leader says must be reflected in what they do, without excuses. When a leader fails to maintain the trust of those they lead, they lose that trust,” Mayiga asserted.

Janet Navuga, CEO of Journey to the Boardroom, shared that the initiative was created to address a growing leadership gap resulting from the retirement and passing of experienced leaders. The program aims to cultivate a new generation of capable individuals equipped to manage institutions effectively and contribute to national development.
