MTN Uganda, through its annual ‘21 Days of Y’ello Care’ initiative, has provided significant support to Kiyunga Health Centre IV in Luuka District. The initiative saw the donation of vital medical equipment, including delivery beds, oxygen concentrators, and autoclaves, aimed at bolstering the facility’s capacity to serve its growing patient base.
A key highlight of the intervention is the installation of a 20-kilowatt hybrid solar power system. This sustainable energy solution is expected to resolve the persistent power challenges faced by the health centre, particularly in critical areas like the theatre and maternity wards, enabling the full utilization of currently underused medical equipment.
MTN’s commitment extended beyond equipment, with staff and partners participating in community outreach. This included a health camp offering free medical services to hundreds of local residents, as well as environmental activities like cleaning the health centre premises and planting trees. The company also provided 10 bicycles and smartphones to Village Health Teams (VHTs) to improve their mobility and data collection capabilities.
This year, MTN plans to invest approximately Shs600 million across four districts – Luuka, Bunyangabu, Gomba, and Amudat – with other health centres also receiving similar support. The health centre, which handles around 3,000 patients monthly, is reportedly struggling with limited resources. Local health officials have commended the donation, noting its potential to significantly improve the quality of care. However, district authorities also emphasized the need for a broader government intervention, suggesting an upgrade of Kiyunga Health Centre IV to a district hospital to meet escalating healthcare demands.
This support is part of MTN’s broader Y’ello Care campaign, where employees volunteer time and resources to community development. The campaign’s focus this year is on healthcare and equitable access to essential services, demonstrating MTN’s dedication to improving lives in the communities it serves.
