The recently appointed Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Wu Guangrong, has officially commenced his duties by encouraging Ugandan students selected for scholarships in China to become active participants in strengthening bilateral relations and driving economic progress.
During his inaugural engagement on August 13 at the Chinese Embassy in Kampala, Ambassador Wu flagged off 31 scholars who will pursue Master’s and Doctoral degrees. He emphasized the significance of youth and cultural exchange, particularly as China designates 2026 as a year for such programs, with a commitment to increasing educational and training opportunities for Ugandans.
“You are not only students, but also potential bridges and new bonds between our two countries,” Ambassador Wu told the scholars, highlighting their role in embodying the spirit of exchange programs. He noted that an increasing number of Ugandans are benefiting from opportunities to study and train in China, fostering deeper understanding and cooperation.
The ambassador also reflected on the long-standing diplomatic relationship between China and Uganda, which has seen significant achievements in sectors like trade, infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare. He urged the students to learn from China’s economic and technological advancements and to act as goodwill ambassadors during their stay.
Ms. Doreen Akunda, President of the China Alumni Association in Uganda, also addressed the scholars, advising them to maintain discipline, respect Chinese laws, and embrace the local culture. Scholars like Joshua Ampumuza and Catherine Nankabirwa expressed their enthusiasm for the academic and networking opportunities, with Nankabirwa specifically aiming to enhance commercial ties between Uganda and China.
These students are expected to bring back not only academic knowledge and qualifications but also a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and a strengthened friendship with the Chinese people, contributing to Uganda’s future development. The previous ambassador, Mr. Zhang Lizhong, concluded his four-year term in January.
