Three years after a devastating fire claimed the lives of 11 pupils and destroyed parts of the school, Salama School for the Blind is set to receive significant infrastructural improvements.
The government has allocated Shs212.7 million to renovate the boys’ dormitory, a project being executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade. This initiative includes modifying the existing dormitory, constructing a protective chain-link fence, and installing a solar power system to enhance the learning and living environment for students with visual impairments.
The ground-breaking ceremony saw local officials express their appreciation for the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children. Mr. Tonny Kalyango, representing the Mukono LCV Chairperson, commended the prioritization of children with special needs and expressed confidence in the UPDF’s ability to deliver quality work.
Ms. Sarah Kibooli Bugoosi, Commissioner for Special Needs Education, emphasized that the renovation is crucial for creating a safer space for learners with disabilities. District officials have pledged close monitoring of the project to ensure it meets required standards. Inspector Moses Yiga noted that while this is a positive step, many rural primary schools in Mukono still face critical infrastructure challenges.
School Head Teacher Ms. Dorothy Ssebadduka welcomed the renovation and pledged the school’s full cooperation. She also highlighted ongoing needs, including more classrooms, better sanitation, a perimeter wall, and a sickbay.
Established in 1999, Salama School for the Blind has grown from its initial 45 pupils to cater to a larger number of children with special needs on its 35-acre campus. The 2022 inferno remains a tragic chapter in the school’s history.
This renovation marks a significant step towards strengthening inclusive education in Mukono.
