Three years after a tragic inferno claimed the lives of 11 pupils and destroyed parts of the institution, Salama School for the Blind is set to get a new lease of life. The government has initiated a Shs212.7 million project to renovate the boys’ dormitory, aiming to significantly improve boarding conditions for its visually impaired learners.

The comprehensive renovation, funded by the Ministry of Education and Sports and executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade, will include modifications to the existing dormitory structure, the erection of a protective chain-link fence, and the installation of a much-needed solar power system.

During the ground-breaking ceremony, local officials expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children. Mr. Tonny Kalyango, representing the Mukono LCV Chairperson, commended the focus on improving educational infrastructure for children with special needs and voiced expectations for high-quality work from the UPDF.

Ms. Sarah Kibooli Bugoosi, Commissioner for Special Needs Education, emphasized that this intervention is crucial for fostering a safer learning and living environment for students with disabilities. The Mukono District administration has pledged to closely monitor the project’s progress through its District Engineer to ensure adherence to established standards.

The school’s Head Teacher, Ms. Dorothy Ssebadduka, welcomed the development and pledged the school’s full cooperation. She also highlighted ongoing challenges, including a shortage of classrooms, inadequate sanitation facilities, the urgent need for a perimeter wall, and the lack of a dedicated sickbay.

Established in 1999, Salama School for the Blind has grown from its initial 45 pupils to become a vital institution for children with special needs in Uganda. This renovation marks a significant step towards rebuilding and enhancing the school’s facilities following the devastating 2022 fire. The project is seen as a move to strengthen inclusive education within Mukono District.
