Tony Mowbray’s return to the Blackburn Rovers dugout was met with a dramatic late twist as Wolverhampton Wanderers snatched a draw through a Raul Jimenez penalty. The Championship season opener at Molineux saw Wolves, tipped for promotion, take an early lead through Marshall Munetsi in the 18th minute.
However, Blackburn, under Mowbray’s guidance, responded swiftly. Sean McLoughlin drew them level nine minutes later with his first goal for the club. The turnaround was completed just three minutes into the second half when Andri Gudjohnsen found the net, giving Rovers the advantage.
Blackburn defended resolutely for much of the second half, appearing set to secure a victory on Mowbray’s comeback. Yet, a late lapse in concentration proved costly. Ryan Alebiosu’s handball inside the penalty area resulted in a spot-kick awarded by referee Farai Hallam.
Substitute Raul Jimenez stepped up and converted the penalty, coolly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner after a distinctive, stuttering run-up. This goal, his first of the season, cancelled out Blackburn’s efforts and ensured the points were shared.
Wolves had shown attacking intent throughout the match, with the likes of Kieran Trippier and Fer Lopez instrumental in creating chances. Despite managing only three shots on target, their dominance was evident before Blackburn’s resurgence. Gudjohnsen’s goal, assisted by Dapo Afolayan’s run, had put Rovers ahead, only for the late drama to unfold.
Both teams are reportedly looking to strengthen their squads before the transfer window closes, with Wolves linked to Jordan James. Their next fixtures see Wolves travel to Preston, while Blackburn host Middlesbrough in what promises to be an emotional homecoming for Mowbray.
