The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), in collaboration with TotalEnergies and Vivo Energy, has completed a crucial upgrade of Mutibwa Road in Jinja City. This Shs1.37 billion project has transformed a 33.3-metre section, previously plagued by poor conditions, into an asphalt-standard road.
Before the upgrade, the road’s gravel surface and inadequate drainage made it nearly impassable during rainy seasons. This often led to fuel trucks queuing along the roadside, creating significant safety and security risks due to the volatile nature of the transported petroleum products.
The newly commissioned road features improved drainage channels on both sides, designed to manage water flow effectively and ensure continuous access, even during heavy rainfall. UNOC’s CEO, Proscovia Nabanja, highlighted that the upgrade is vital for supporting petroleum product movement and UNOC’s operations, especially as fuel demand grows.
“This infrastructure investment will not only improve access to the terminal but also contribute to the wider transformation of Jinja City’s road network and urban infrastructure,” Ms. Nabanja stated. Jinja City Engineer Charles Mugweri confirmed the road meets required standards, providing a reliable route for heavy vehicles and businesses.
The project’s success is expected to positively impact the city’s industrial and commercial corridors, offering a durable and efficient connection for numerous businesses reliant on the oil terminal route. This development aligns with Jinja City’s broader plans to enhance urban road infrastructure in the current financial year.
