Ugandan Students Innovate with Irrigation and Feed-Making Machines

A team of students from Makerere University, alongside peers from Uganda Technical College (UTC) Lira and Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) Nakawa, have unveiled groundbreaking agricultural innovations.
Their creations include an automatic irrigation system designed to optimize water usage and a multi-purpose machine capable of processing various ingredients into animal feed. These projects were presented at a recent exhibition, highlighting the students’ commitment to finding practical solutions for the agricultural sector.
The automatic irrigation system, developed by students from Makerere and UICT, utilizes sensors to monitor soil moisture levels and intelligently distributes water, thereby conserving resources and ensuring optimal crop hydration. This innovation could significantly benefit farmers by reducing manual labor and improving crop yields, especially in areas prone to drought.
Meanwhile, students from UTC Lira focused on creating a feed-making machine. This device is engineered to process a range of agricultural by-products and local ingredients into nutritious animal feed. The ability to produce feed locally and affordably can be a game-changer for livestock farmers, potentially lowering operational costs and enhancing animal health.
These student-led initiatives underscore the growing spirit of innovation within Uganda’s educational institutions, particularly in applying technical knowledge to real-world agricultural challenges. The projects aim to boost productivity and sustainability in farming.
