Uganda’s manufacturing sector is embracing a sustainable future with a groundbreaking innovation utilizing locally developed bamboo. State Minister for Privatisation and Investment, Aminah Mukalazi, lauded Modern Laminates Limited for their pioneering work, highlighting its potential to significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imported paper products.

During a visit to the MMP Industrial Park in Buikwe, Minister Mukalazi observed the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and its diversified product range. She emphasized that using locally sourced bamboo, genetically engineered within Uganda, not only supports value addition but also champions circular economy principles. This local initiative could offset an estimated $100 million (approximately Shs360 billion) in annual paper imports.

“This demonstrates the potential for sustainable local value addition,” stated Minister Mukalazi, adding that the innovation sets a strong pace for sustainability and innovation, paving the way for regional market expansion.

Buikwe District Woman MP and Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Diana Mutasingwa, echoed the minister’s sentiments, noting the “significant progress” in increasing the production of Ugandan-made goods for both domestic and international markets. She also pointed out the positive impact these investments have on surrounding communities, including infrastructure development and job creation.

Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Director General Robert Mukiza confirmed the positive economic impact, noting that the industries currently employ over 960 Ugandans, underscoring the vital role of investment in job creation and driving industrial growth.

This development marks a significant step towards self-sufficiency and economic advancement for Uganda, leveraging its natural resources and innovative capacity. The potential for bamboo to replace traditional wood pulp in paper production offers a more environmentally friendly and economically viable alternative.
