Bishop Lawrence Mukasa of the Kasana-Luwero Diocese has expressed strong support for a new initiative by Our Lady of Africa Church Mbuya. The program seeks to provide parents with educational materials to enhance the teaching of Catholic values in the home.

Speaking at a recent confirmation ceremony for over 200 children, Bishop Mukasa highlighted the critical role of the family as the fundamental unit of the Christian community. He voiced concerns about the increasing breakdown of families and the subsequent challenges this poses to the spiritual upbringing of children, often leading to limited parental involvement.

The initiative, spearheaded by Rev Fr James Patrick Jjumba, the parish priest, is designed to empower parents to take a more active role in their children’s faith formation. Fr Jjumba explained that the parish has developed a syllabus and materials identical to those used in religious education, allowing parents to reinforce learning at home.

This effort aligns with the Church’s broader evangelization mission, extending religious instruction beyond formal settings and into the domestic sphere. Fr Jjumba noted the Church’s commitment to guiding families, particularly through marriage counseling and support groups, while acknowledging the difficulties in reaching all couples facing marital issues.

During the confirmation service, parents were asked to pledge their continued commitment to their children’s faith journey. However, the response was notably subdued, with only a few parents standing, underscoring the need for greater parental engagement that the new initiative aims to address.

This program by Our Lady of Africa Church Mbuya is a significant step towards strengthening faith within Catholic households, with the support of Bishop Mukasa. Read more about this initiative in the Daily Monitor.
