Southern Lebanon experienced one of its bloodiest days since a ceasefire was announced in June, with Israeli airstrikes claiming the lives of eleven people. The attacks, which authorities are calling a severe escalation, have reignited tensions between Lebanon and Israel.

In the village of Ansar, a strike on a residential building resulted in the deaths of seven people, including three children and two women, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. He strongly condemned the incident, stating that the victims were civilians and not military targets, emphasizing that their right to life is non-negotiable.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for one of the strikes, asserting that they targeted and killed a Hezbollah commander, Ali Samir al-Haj Hassan, who they accused of using his family as human shields. The IDF stated that Hassan was involved in advancing terror attacks against Israeli soldiers and was a lawful target. They further alleged that Hezbollah deliberately placed civilians within a military compound to fabricate accusations against Israel.

Hezbollah, however, dismissed these claims as false, asserting that Lebanese civilians were deliberately targeted in their homes. The group stated that the remains of many victims were discovered, contradicting Israel’s assertion that military sites were struck.

Later on Saturday, another Israeli strike hit the town of Deir al-Zahrani, killing four and injuring five others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. These events come amid ongoing conflict that began on March 2nd when Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader.

Israel responded with a bombing campaign and invasion of southern Lebanon, with its forces currently occupying approximately 5% of Lebanese territory. A June ceasefire framework calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament, Israeli withdrawal, and the deployment of the Lebanese army across the region. Despite the agreement, sporadic Israeli strikes and demolitions have continued. Negotiators from both countries are expected to meet again in September.
