India has lauded the recent appointment of Mr. Sanjay Tanna to Uganda’s Cabinet, with the Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, Upender Singh Rawat, describing it as a significant recognition of the Indian community’s ongoing contributions to Uganda’s social and economic landscape. Speaking at the 80th Indian Independence Day celebrations, Mr. Rawat also welcomed the election of Mr. Tanna’s son, Shyam Tanna, as the Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality, emphasizing these appointments as clear indicators of the Ugandan government’s appreciation for the diaspora’s role.

Mr. Rawat further elaborated that the Indian government, in collaboration with Ugandan authorities and business forums, is actively working to attract more Indian investors. Key sectors identified for potential investment include agriculture, tourism, and crucially, pharmaceutical manufacturing. The High Commissioner urged members of the Indian community to remain respectful of Ugandan cultural values, laws, and immigration policies as they continue to expand their business interests.

Trade Minister Sanjay Tanna, addressing a recent medical exhibition, echoed the call for investment, specifically urging Indian pharmaceutical companies to establish manufacturing plants within Uganda. He highlighted the potential benefits, such as reducing medicine costs, generating employment opportunities, and facilitating technology transfer, noting that Uganda currently imports a significant portion of its medicines from India. The Minister also pointed out the need for locally manufactured medical equipment to address shortages in healthcare facilities.

The medical exhibition itself, organized by the Indian Business Forum and Astrovision Global FZCo, showcased 14 pharmaceutical companies, alongside those involved in contract manufacturing, drug packaging, and factory construction. In a separate initiative celebrating Indian Independence Day, the Bank of India and the Indian Association of Uganda launched a blood donation drive aimed at collecting 25,000 units, contributing to Uganda’s healthcare sector.
