President Yoweri Museveni has extended his congratulations to his grandson, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, and fellow Ugandan cadet Andrew Bakira Ruyondo, following their recent graduation from the esteemed Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
In a broader message to Ugandans, President Museveni expressed gratitude for the nation’s protection and acknowledged the achievements of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) over the past six decades. He specifically highlighted the recent accomplishment of his grandson joining the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) after completing his training at Sandhurst.
“Now, God has blessed me with one of my grandchildren, Ruhamya, joining my big family of UPDF, having graduated, with his colleague, Bakira, from Sandhurst recently,” the President stated, adding “Congratulations Ruhamya, congratulations Bakira.”
President Museveni also encouraged young Ugandans to consider careers in the military, emphasizing that army service offers a solid foundation for personal development. He extended his congratulations to the parents of both newly commissioned officers.
This graduation marks a significant achievement, particularly for Andrew Bakira Ruyondo, who was recognized as the best international cadet, earning the prestigious International Sword. This award is presented to the overseas cadet who demonstrates exceptional performance in leadership, resilience, and military skills throughout the rigorous 44-week course.
Both Bakira and Ruhamya were sponsored by the UPDF for their officer training program at the British military academy. Ruhamya, the eldest son of Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a Sandhurst alumnus himself, joined the UPDF as a private in June 2025 before being selected for officer training. Gen. Muhoozi attended the commissioning ceremony to celebrate his son’s graduation alongside the Ruyondo family.
