Members of Parliament’s Presidential Affairs Committee have thrown their weight behind the proposed expansion of the Africa Coffee Park in Ntungamo. The committee believes this significant investment, estimated at Shs294 billion ($79.2 million), is crucial for advancing Uganda’s industrialization agenda, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing the value addition of coffee.
During a recent tour of the facility, committee members witnessed firsthand the progress of ongoing construction and the existing production infrastructure. They expressed satisfaction with how Inspire Africa, the implementing agency, has utilized the resources provided so far.
“We are proud of Inspire Africa. They have done a great job,” stated Sarah Babirye, MP for Bukoto East. “The little funds given to them they have put to great use.”
Zahrah Luyirika, MP for Makindye West, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the project’s potential to showcase Uganda’s development to the world. “I can see money has been put to its value. I call upon all Ugandans and Africa at large to get to this project and it will be very impactful to our country Uganda and it is going to sell us to the world,” she said.
A key challenge identified was the need for a stable and robust electricity supply, with the park requiring approximately 10 megawatts to operate at full capacity. Committee Chairman Simon Peter Opolot confirmed that the government is already addressing this issue.
The committee’s commitment includes actively pursuing the necessary government financing to ensure the park can achieve its full potential. “We have resolved that we are going to fully support the Africa Coffee Park to realise its dream of socioeconomic transformation,” Opolot affirmed.
Inspire Africa CEO Nelson Tugume emphasized the importance of industrializing and processing agricultural products domestically to retain economic value and jobs within Uganda, rather than exporting raw materials.
