Authorities in Kapchorwa have apprehended the headteacher of Teryet Secondary School, Dr. Justin Yapsoyekwo, and the school’s bursar, Banis Chebet. The arrests stem from serious allegations of inflating the school’s student population by a staggering 706 individuals.
Investigators are probing claims that the school management submitted enrollment figures of 853 students, while the actual number of learners present is said to be only 147. This alleged inflation of numbers is suspected to have been a deliberate ploy to illegally secure government capitation grants.
Preliminary findings suggest that the purported ghost students allowed Teryet Secondary School to receive approximately Shs 37 million each term from the government. These funds were allegedly channeled based on the falsified enrollment data, depriving legitimate students and educational programs of vital resources.
The joint security team apprehended the two officials, who are now being held at Kapchorwa Central Police Station. Sipi Police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang confirmed the arrests and stated that the investigation is ongoing.
Police aim to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraud, including how the discrepancies were engineered and if any other school officials were complicit in the scheme. The outcome of this investigation is expected to shed light on the internal operations of the school and the mechanisms used to access government funding.
